Ever since gaming PCs became popular, Windows has been the go-to operating system for gamers. But when it comes to handheld gaming, Microsoft hasn’t seen the same level of success. Enter SteamOS. Following the release of the Steam Deck, Valve’s Linux-based operating system has proven itself to be a superior gaming platform compared to Windows on handheld devices. Now, it seems Valve is taking things a step further by preparing a public release of SteamOS, allowing users to turn almost any device into a Steam Deck.
A Big Move by Valve
As reported by WccfTech, a user named SadlyItsDadley recently posted on X (formerly Twitter) with a cryptic message: “It’s almost here,” accompanied by the SteamOS logo. In the replies, they clarified that the image shows the splash screen for the boot process of a general release of SteamOS. That’s right—this version isn’t locked to the Steam Deck.
This move could be a game-changer. While Steam Deck users have already enjoyed the benefits of SteamOS, a public release would mean that you could install it on virtually any device.
What Does This Mean for Gamers?
With SteamOS in the hands of the public, the possibilities are endless. The obvious choice would be other handheld gaming devices—if you’re stuck with an OS you don’t like, you could simply replace it with SteamOS. But what about PCs? While the X posts don’t explicitly mention desktop support, you can bet some enthusiasts will try to make it work as a dedicated gaming OS for PCs.
On top of that, we might see some crazy experiments. Imagine turning a Nintendo Switch, a Raspberry Pi, or even a smart fridge into a “Steam Deck.” The “can it run Doom?” joke might be replaced by “can it run SteamOS?”
Will SteamOS Dethrone Windows?
While this public release is a big step forward, SteamOS still has a way to go before it can fully challenge Windows as the king of gaming operating systems. There are features and compatibility issues Valve will need to address.
That said, making SteamOS publicly available for free installation on any device is an exciting move—and one that could pave the way for a new era in gaming. Gamers everywhere will be watching closely to see just how far this OS can go.
